Dr. Mariangela Allocca is a gastroenterologist and Head of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Unit at the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, directed by Professor Silvio Danese.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1995, she specialized in Gastroenterology at the same university in 1999. She completed her training by earning both a PhD and a European Fellowship in Gastroenterology in 2004.

An internationally recognized gastroenterologist, she specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of IBD, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and microscopic colitis, with a particular focus on managing the most complex cases using the most innovative therapies.

She is an expert in the non-invasive assessment of IBD using intestinal ultrasound, a field in which she has significantly contributed to the development of innovative diagnostic tools. She is the creator of ultrasound scores for disease activity, including the Milan Ultrasound Criteria for ulcerative colitis and the Bowel Ultrasound Score for Crohn’s disease.

She is a member of the European scientific committee responsible for developing guidelines for the management of IBD and is President Elect of the International Intestinal Ultrasound Society (IBUS).

Her research is conducted nationally and internationally and focuses on the development of new pharmacological therapies for IBD.

She has authored numerous scientific publications in international journals and book chapters, is regularly invited as a speaker at national and international conferences, and is actively involved in leading scientific societies in the field.
